What is Periodontal Therapy?
Periodontal therapy deals with repair to damaged tissue in the gums that were caused by periodontal (gum) disease. The reason that tissue damage due to gum disease can be so dangerous is that it has the potential to spread throughout the mouth to the jaw bone and beyond. Letting gum disease spread to the jaw bone could end up having long-term ramifications to your oral health, including potential tooth loss. The point of periodontal therapy is to restore damaged tissue to its original form by either deep cleaning plaque and tartar beneath the gum line, or repairing lost tissue through surgery.
If you have gum disease or are at risk, call our dentist, Dr. Kevin Ward at Ward Dental Care, at (304) 754-9008 or contact us online.
Procedures for Periodontal Therapy
There are a few different periodontal therapy procedures that can be used to fight gum disease. The purpose of these procedures is to repair damaged gum tissue and support the teeth, thus preventing unnecessary tooth loss. As always, it is important to drastically reduce plaque and tartar in order to help the gums recover after they have been damaged. By protecting the jaw bone and teeth, you also protect the rest of the mouth. This can be done either with or without surgery, by using some of the following procedures:
– Periodontal Plastic Surgery
– Periodontal Laser Surgery
– Gum Grafting
– Crown Lengthening Surgery
– Scaling
– Dental Implants
– Root Planing
